炉（ろ）
茶道において、畳の下に備え付けられている小さな囲炉裏で水を温める。

炉縁（ろぶち）
炉の切られた部分（畳と炉の間）に木製の枠・炉縁をはめ込む。装飾的に、また火気が畳に伝わるのを防ぐため。

棗は中塗りの工程となりました。
今までは、砥石とヘラの技術でしたが、今度は刷毛の技術です。
刷毛は昔は海女さんの髪の毛が使われていたとのこと。
海水にさらされ、適度に油気が抜けたものが漆の含みが良いとのこと。
現在は海女さんではありませんが、人毛です。

The Natsume is now in the middle of the painting process.
So far, we had used a whetstone and a spatula, but now it was time to use a brush.
The brushes used to be made from the hair of women divers.
The hair was exposed to seawater, and the oiliness of the hair was removed.
Nowadays, the hair is not from a woman diver, but it is human hair.

錆研ぎができたので、そこに漆を吸わせて更に堅牢にします。
ついでに外側の木地にも漆を吸わせることで、木目がより鮮明になります。
完成が見えてきました！！

Now that the Sabi has been sharpened, Urushi is absorbed into the surface to make it more durable.
In addition, Urushi is also absorbed into the outer wood to make the grain of the wood more vivid.

錆研ぎ。
砥石で研ぎます。
仕上がりの形状をイメージして砥石の形状を作ります。
つまり、研ぎの技術は砥石の技術となります。

Sabi sharpening.
Sharpening with a whetstone.
The shape of the grindstone is created based on the image of the finished shape.
In other words, the sharpening technique is the technique of the grinding stone.

棗の続きです。
”錆付け”という下地作業。
錆とは、漆＋砥粉＋水を練った粘土状のパテのようなもので、これをヘラでつけていきます。
この錆を何層にも重ねてつけます。
最も下の層は、粒子の荒い砥粉を使い、上の層にいくにつれ粒子の細かい砥粉を使います。
この錆が固まると、漆の強さでカチンコチンに固くなります。
塗ってしまうとこの下地層は見えませんが、京漆器はこの下地をしているので、堅牢な漆器となります。

This is the continuation of the Natsume.
This is the preliminary work called “Sabi”.
Sabi is a clay-like putty-like mixture of Urushi, abrasive powder, and water, which is applied with a spatula.
This Sabi is applied in layers.
The bottom layer is made of rough abrasive powder, and the upper layers are made of finer abrasive powder.
When this Sabi hardens, the strength of the Urushi makes it harden into a crust.
Once the Urushi is applied, this base layer cannot be seen, but Kyoto style Urushi-ware has this base layer, which makes the Urushi-ware robust.

柿合塗りの台差が完成！
これは、お寺などに展示してある大きな軸を収納する箱です。
今回は180cm幅くらいなので、かなり大きな軸！国宝級の軸かも…？

Daisashi of Kakiawase-nuri is complete!
This is a box for storing large axes that are displayed at temples.
This time, it was about 180 cm wide, so it was quite a big axis! It may be a national treasure...?

中塗りができました！
いい感じに漆の質感と桐の木目が現れました。
砥石で軽く研ぎ、次は上塗りです。
長さ150〜180cmくらいの大きさが４点あるので、気合入れます！！

The middle coat is done!
The texture of the Urushi and the grain of the paulownia wood are now nicely visible.
After lightly sharpening with a whetstone, the next step is the top coating.
There are four pieces, each about 150-180 cm long, so I'm ready to go!

柿合塗りは、木地の目止め作業で柿渋を吸わせます。
私の場合は5回塗り重ねます。
後の漆の工程が美しく仕上がるからです。
５回塗るのは結構大変で、更には今回は大きな箱（台差）だったので、柿渋まみれの一日作業でした！

Kakiawase-nuri is a process of sealing the wood to absorb the persimmon tannin.
In my case, I apply five coats.
Because it gives a beautiful finish to the subsequent Urushi process.
Five coats is quite a lot of work, and since this was large boxes, Daisashi, I was covered in persimmon tannin all day long!

「柿合塗り」は下地に柿渋を塗ります。
柿渋で目止めをして、漆で仕上げる技法です。
柿渋は凄く臭いので、いつも外で作業します。
それでも服に匂いが付いて、家族には迷惑がられます！！

In "Kakiawase-nuri", persimmon tannin is applied to the base.
It is a technique of sealing with persimmon tannin and finishing with Urushi.
The persimmon tannin smells so bad that I always work outside.
Even so, the smell sticks to my clothes and annoys my family!

すると、隠れたバリを研ぐことができ、木目の美しさが顕著になります。

As a preliminary step, the wood is moistened and lightly sharpened.
In this way, hidden burrs can be sharpened and the natural appearance of the wood becomes more pronounced.

柿合塗りは木目を生かした塗り技法ですが、木口部分は漆を全て吸ってしまうので、錆（漆のパテ）で目止めします。そして、錆が固まったので砥石で研ぎました。

Kakiawase-nuri is a painting technique that makes the best use of the grain of the wood, but since the mouth of the wood absorbs all the Urushi, it is sealed with Sabi (Urushi putty). After the Sabi had hardened, I sharpened it with a whetstone.
